Baseball and the DR

Last night I watched a video about baseball players in la República Dominicana, and it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Thousands of young guys wanting to be the next David Ortiz and Vladimir Guerrero. It was incredible to see all the kids with broom sticks playing pelota with the tops of milk jugs, future peloteros en las grandes ligas.

They took us from little, little kids wanting to play there, to 17, 18 and 19 year olds getting signed to play at big league academies in the Dominican Republic. Naturally, like in the states, only a few will ever make it to the show. But the way the play the game, the confidence they have in themselves and the fun they have showing off in front of their friends is just amazing. It’s like the whole country knows what Baseball is all about.

That would be one of my dream jobs, I think. Going to the DR and teaching kids how to play baseball, being a talent evaluator, meeting potential big leaguers and helping them pull their families out of poverty.

If anyone knows how I might get this job, let me know.
